On 11 April 2024, a webinar was organised to introduce the Belgian Index of Multiple Deprivation (BIMD), a new tool providing an overview of social deprivation in Belgium. The BIMD integrates six key areas — education, employment, income, housing, crime and health — providing a nuanced understanding of societal challenges. Computed at statistical area level, the BIMD ranks and groups areas from most to least deprived.
The webinar provided insights into the BIMD’s methodological framework, detailing its development and the significance of each domain. In addition, we discussed different practical uses of the BIMD.
The BIMD was developed by the ELLIS consortium, which is coordinated by the Sciensano Health Information Service.
