Employment trends in the general hospital sector

Nurses represent the largest group (40%) of salaried staff in hospitals in 2020 with 54,287 full-time equivalents (FTE). However[1], the figures shown in the chart below vastly underestimate the activity of medical staff active in general hospitals. After all, many doctors are self-employed and are therefore not declared as salaried medical personnel.

The volume of FTEs (= Fulltime equivalents) increased by 4,198 FTEs (+3.22%) over the past 5 years. The largest increase is observed among medical salaried personnel (+26.62%). This increase is mainly due to the increase in the number of physician specialists in training.
